Prestigious Parliament Library is ready

A long felt need for a modern library facility for the parliamentarians has now been fulfilled. The prestigious Parliament Library Building in Delhi, built by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) is now ready for inauguration. The Parliament Library building is a tribute to the ingenuity of the innumerable engineers of the CPWD and its Central Design Organization, who were very enthusiastic about using the best materials possible and the latest technologies for this structure. It is a great credit to the architect Mr Raj Rewal of Delhi, and the contractor, the ECC construction division of M/s Larsen & Toubro Ltd and its engineers, and the sub contractors and hundred of workers who contributed to this effort.

The Parliament Library building is designed for a service life of 125 years. NiDI and ISSDA were contacted in 1994 by the engineers of the CPWD for identifying a material suitable for cramps for holding the external sand stonework in place, in tact, during the service life of the building. Stainless steel type 304 was recommended. CPWD engineers were provided all necessary assistance in terms of designs for the cramps, suppliers and a wealth of technical information about stainless steelsthrough NiDI publications.Over a period of time, through discussions with NiDI & ISSDA and its member companies, CPWD engineers were greatly impressed by the corrosion resistance, strength, durability and minimal maintenance requirements of stainless steel. The result was that about 350 tonnes of stainless steel AISI 304 were specified and used for diverse applications such as structural members for the domes, cramps, handrails, library stacks, base structure for tables and chairs, door handles & cupboard handles, covers for air-conditioning ducts, kitchen & pantry equipment etc. Throughout this period NiDI, ISSDA and its member companies supported the project in every way possible. Some of the results have been pictorially illustrated in this issue of STAINLESS INDIA.

A very interesting feature of this project is that a majority of the applications of stainless steel are for structural applications -- viz cramps, domes, furniture, library stacks, handrails etc.
